The Story of Intentional Supervision Designs
Intentional Supervision Designs, or ISD, is the brainchild of two passionate individuals, Kelly and Ashly, who share a deep enthusiasm for supervision. Their journey began when they were introduced by a mutual colleague and discovered a remarkable alignment in their values and interests. What started as a collaboration on a single supervisory training quickly evolved into the development of a comprehensive program and eventually led to the establishment of an entire company dedicated to revolutionizing the field of supervision.
At the core of ISD's mission is a profound belief in the transformative power of supervision. Recognizing its potential to foster professional growth or inflict significant harm, Kelly and Ashly have witnessed firsthand the extensive impact supervision can have on shaping a clinicians' professional identity, clinical approach, their relationship to the field, their relationship to colleagues, and overall well-being. Motivated by numerous accounts of injurious supervision and the associated detrimental effects, both for supervisees and supervisors, they resolved to drive change.
ISD's overarching objective is to shift the paradigm away from the notion that a fully licensed clinician is inherently prepared to assume the role of a supervisor without ongoing support. Kelly and Ashly understand that strong clinical skills do not necessarily translate to effective supervisory skills. The ability to translate a clinician's existing skills into the competencies required for effective supervision requires intentional training and preparation. Consequently, ISD is committed to assisting practices in clarifying their expectations of supervisors, establishing structures conducive to ethical and sustainable supervisory relationships, delivering consistent supervisor training, assessing readiness for supervisory roles, and providing ongoing support to new supervisors.
Drawing on their complementary expertise, Ashly contributes her extensive academic background in supervision, including a PhD in the field, coupled with years of experience as a contracted supervisor. Meanwhile, Kelly brings invaluable real-world insights gained from navigating the challenges of supervision within a group practice, along with a track record of developing diverse supervisory programs. Together, they cultivate an environment at ISD that fosters curiosity, vulnerability, self-reflection, and professional growth.
